National Assembly President Advocates for Peaceful Growth in Buddhism at Local Ceremony

PHNOM PENH, July 19, 2024 — During a ceremonial event where candles and gifts were offered to monks at nine pagodas and seven hermitages in Leuk Dek district, Kandal province, National Assembly President Khuon Sodary spoke about the intersection of peace and religious practice in Cambodia.

The ceremony, which took place on the morning of July 18, 2024, at Wat Kiri Ratanaream, also known as Wat Kampong Phnom Knong in Kampong Phnom commune, was marked by a talk from President Sodary, who relayed messages from Techo Hun Sen, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the King and President of the Senate, and Prime Minister Hun Manet.

In her address, President Sodary highlighted the significance of the July 2023 elections, describing them as a historic turning point for Cambodia. She noted that this election marked a peaceful transition of leadership, a notable departure from the country's turbulent past where changes in leadership often led to conflict.

Reflecting on Cambodia’s journey towards peace, she credited former Prime Minister Hun Sen for his decisive role in stabilizing the country and preparing for a new generation of leadership. She praised Prime Minister Hun Manet for his moral integrity and vision, which she believes will sustain peace and development in Cambodia.

The attendees, including monks and local citizens, expressed their gratitude to President Sodary, who they view as a pivotal community figure in Leuk Dek district. Her ongoing engagement has contributed to significant local development, particularly in fostering the dual growth of both spiritual and civic spheres.

In addition to spiritual discourse, the ceremony was also a time for giving, with significant donations made to the local religious and civic bodies. Over 29 million riels were donated towards the construction and upkeep of religious sites, with additional contributions of 40 million riels in food donations. Financial support was also extended to local elders, students, and administrative bodies, totaling more than 6 million riels.
